SquadScope Phase 1 Completion Log

Date: 2026-05-18T10:26:47Z Phase: 1 — MVP Scaffold & Manual Validation Status: ✅ COMPLETE

Overview

Phase 1 successfully established the SquadScope MVP: a GitHub trending repository analyzer with a Hugo frontend, Python stdlib-only crawler, and manual weekly validation pipeline. All 7 foundational issues closed. Key PRs reviewed and merged.

Issues Closed

  1. #1 — Project Initialization & Identity ✅
  2. #2 — Python Project Scaffold ✅
  3. #3 — Hugo Frontend with PaperMod Theme ✅
  4. #4 — Hugo Built-in RSS Path ✅
  5. #5 — Stdlib-Only Python Crawler ✅
  6. #6 — Crawler Hardening (Filters, Caching, Rate Limits) ✅
  7. #7 — Dry-Run Manual Validation & Data Quality ✅

Key Decisions Captured

  • Branch → PR → Review → Merge workflow established for code quality and GitHub history clarity
  • Copilot reviews activated: all review conversations must resolve before merging
  • Hugo version pinning required across all environments
  • Crawler design: README lookups as degradable signals (not hard-stop)
  • Trending computation: requires historical baseline (not just popularity)
  • Content filtering: needs enhancement before auto-publish

PRs Merged

  • PR #25: Manual crawl-to-publish dry-run validation (Leela review)
    • Identified schema alignment issue for Phase 2 follow-up
  • PR #26: Crawler hardening with filters, caching, rate limits (Bender implementation)
    • 13 Copilot review comments addressed
    • All Copilot conversations resolved before merge
    • Final commit: 779f9ef

Deliverables

Infrastructure

  • ✅ Hugo site with PaperMod theme configured
  • ✅ RSS output at /index.xml
  • ✅ GitHub Actions deployment workflow
  • ✅ Python project scaffold with test framework

Crawler

  • ✅ Stdlib-only Python crawler (urllib)
  • ✅ Weekly snapshot saving to data/snapshots/
  • ✅ Rate-limit handling and caching
  • ✅ Significance filtering (repos, descriptions, READMEs)
  • ✅ Pagination support (up to 1,000 results)

Validation

  • ✅ Live crawl sample run validated
  • ✅ Test suite executed and passing
  • ✅ Hugo build minification tested

Key Technical Achievements

  1. Low-Overhead Architecture: No external dependencies (stdlib-only crawler)
  2. Resilience: Graceful degradation for rate limits and partial GitHub responses
  3. Deterministic Execution: Repeatable crawls suitable for automation
  4. Data Durability: Weekly snapshots + cache enable trending computation
  5. Quality Gates: Significance filtering + manual validation

Issues Identified for Phase 2

  1. Analyzed Artifact Schema: data/analyzed/2026-W21-summary.md needs alignment to Signal/Noise/Gaps contract
  2. Hugo Version: Must pin v0.146.0+ (v0.161.1+ confirmed working)
  3. Trending Data: Historical baseline required for momentum-based rather than popularity-based trending
  4. Content Quality: Stronger filtering needed to exclude exploits, bypasses, cheats, game-mods
  5. Analyze/Generate Contract: Explicit mapping definition needed between analyzer output and Hugo content shape

Team Contributions

  • Leela (Lead): PR review, quality assurance, architectural oversight
  • Bender (Crawler): Crawler hardening, caching, rate limiting, Copilot review resolution
  • Fry (Analyst): Dry-run validation, data quality assessment, Hugo environment audit
  • Amy (Frontend): Hugo setup, RSS configuration, deployment infrastructure
  • Ralph (Engineer): Python scaffold, project structure, CI/CD foundation

Handoff to Phase 2

Phase 1 provides a solid foundation for Phase 2 (Automation): - ✅ Manual validation pipeline working - ✅ All architectural decisions documented - ✅ Known issues and technical debt captured in decisions.md - ✅ Team patterns established (PR workflow, Copilot reviews)

Phase 2 focus: GitHub Actions workflows, scheduled crawls, Copilot integration, schema finalization.

Quality Metrics

  • All issues closed on target
  • All PRs reviewed and merged with Copilot conversation resolution
  • Zero blocking bugs in Phase 1 deliverables
  • Documented technical debt for Phase 2

Next Phase Begins: 2026-05-18T12:30:00Z (estimated)
