🔍 Audit Findings

✅ PASS: Environment Variables

Location: .env, .env.production

Status: PROTECTED - ✅ .env is in .gitignore - ✅ .env.production is in .gitignore - ✅ No .env files committed to repository - ✅ Verified with: git ls-files | grep .env (returns empty)

Evidence: ```

From .gitignore:

.env .env.production ```

✅ PASS: No Hardcoded Credentials

Locations Checked: All *.ts, *.js, *.astro files

Status: CLEAN - ✅ No actual GitHub tokens in code - ✅ No API keys hardcoded - ✅ All credentials loaded from import.meta.env or process.env

Code Review: ```typescript // CORRECT: Token loaded from environment const GITHUB_TOKEN = import.meta.env.GITHUB_TOKEN

// NEVER do this: // const GITHUB_TOKEN = "ghp_actual_token_here" ❌ ```

✅ PASS: API Endpoint Security

Location: src/pages/api/download-desktop-app.ts

Status: SECURE

Security Measures: 1. ✅ Token never included in response 2. ✅ Token only used server-side 3. ✅ Token sent to GitHub via Authorization header 4. ✅ No token logging in production 5. ✅ Error messages don't leak token 6. ✅ Downloads proxied through server (token not exposed to client)

Response Example (Safe): json { "version": "v1.0.0", "downloads": [ { "url": "/api/download-desktop-app?action=download&assetId=12345" } ] } Note: Asset ID is public (from GitHub), not sensitive.

✅ PASS: Documentation

Locations: *.md files

Status: SAFE - ✅ Only placeholder tokens used (ghp_your_token_here) - ✅ Clear instructions to NOT commit tokens - ✅ No actual tokens in examples

Example Placeholders Used: - ghp_your_token_here ✅ - ghp_your_actual_token_here ✅ - your_token_here ✅

✅ PASS: Test Scripts

Location: scripts/test-github-releases.js

Status: SECURE - ✅ Reads token from environment only - ✅ Truncates token in output (ghp_abcd12...) - ✅ No token logging in normal operation

Safe Output Example: ✓ GitHub token found (ghp_abcd12...)

✅ PASS: Client-Side Code

Location: src/pages/download.astro

Status: SECURE - ✅ No token access on client side - ✅ Only calls public API endpoint - ✅ JavaScript runs in browser (no server secrets)

🛡️ Security Measures Implemented

1. Environment Variable Protection

# .gitignore ensures these are NEVER committed:
.env
.env.production

2. Server-Side Token Usage

// Token only used in server-side API routes
export const prerender = false // Ensures server-side execution
const GITHUB_TOKEN = import.meta.env.GITHUB_TOKEN  // Server env only

3. Token Validation

if (!GITHUB_TOKEN) {
  console.error('GITHUB_TOKEN is not configured')
  return new Response(JSON.stringify({ error: 'Server configuration error' }), {
    status: 500
  })
}

4. Secure Token Transmission

// Token sent only to GitHub, never to client
headers: {
  Authorization: `Bearer ${GITHUB_TOKEN}`,
  Accept: 'application/vnd.github+json'
}

5. Download Proxying

// Client requests: /api/download-desktop-app?action=download&assetId=123
// Server authenticates with GitHub
// GitHub returns temporary redirect URL
// Client downloads file (no token exposure)

🚨 What Could Go Wrong (And Prevention)

Risk 1: Accidentally Committing .env

Prevention: - ✅ .env in .gitignore - ✅ .env.example provided instead (no real tokens) - ✅ Documentation warns about this

If It Happens: ```bash

Immediately revoke the token at:

https://github.com/settings/tokens

Remove from git history:

git filter-branch --force --index-filter \ "git rm --cached --ignore-unmatch .env" \ --prune-empty --tag-name-filter cat -- --all

Force push (careful!):

git push origin --force --all ```

Risk 2: Token in Logs

Prevention: - ✅ No token logging in production code - ✅ Test script truncates token output - ✅ Error messages don't include token

Safe Logging: ``javascript // DO this: log(✓ GitHub token found (${GITHUB_TOKEN.substring(0, 10)}...)`)

// DON'T do this: log(Token: ${GITHUB_TOKEN}) // ❌ ```

Risk 3: Token in Client-Side Code

Prevention: - ✅ API routes marked as prerender = false (server-only) - ✅ Client code only calls public endpoints - ✅ No import.meta.env.GITHUB_TOKEN in .astro client code

Risk 4: Token in Error Messages

Prevention: typescript // Safe error handling: return new Response( JSON.stringify({ error: 'Internal server error', message: error instanceof Error ? error.message : 'Unknown error' // No token details included }), { status: 500 } )

✅ Security Checklist for Deployment

  • .env is in .gitignore
  • No .env files in git history
  • No hardcoded tokens in source code
  • Token only used server-side
  • Token never in API responses
  • Token never logged (or truncated if logged)
  • Environment variables set in hosting platform
  • Documentation uses only placeholder tokens
  • Error messages don't leak sensitive info
  • Downloads proxied (token not exposed to clients)

🔐 Token Management Best Practices

Creating Tokens

  1. Use Fine-Grained Tokens (Recommended)

    • Scope to specific repository only
    • Set to Read-only access
    • Set expiration date (1 year max)
  2. Use Classic Tokens (Alternative)

    • Minimum scope: repo for private repos
    • Set expiration date
    • Document creation date

Storing Tokens

Development: ```bash

Store in .env (gitignored)

echo "GITHUB_TOKEN=ghp_your_token" > .env ```

Production: - Store in hosting platform's environment variables - Never commit to repository - Use secrets management (Vercel/Netlify/etc.)

Rotating Tokens

Schedule: Every 6-12 months

Process: 1. Generate new token 2. Update .env locally 3. Test locally 4. Update production environment variables 5. Verify production works 6. Revoke old token 7. Document rotation in calendar

Revoking Tokens

When to Revoke: - Token accidentally committed - Suspected compromise - Employee departure - Regular rotation schedule

How to Revoke: 1. Go to https://github.com/settings/tokens 2. Find the token 3. Click "Delete" or "Revoke" 4. Generate new token immediately 5. Update all environments

📊 Security Monitoring

What to Monitor

  1. GitHub Token Usage

  2. API Logs

    • Watch for authentication failures
    • Monitor error rates
    • Check for unusual traffic patterns
  3. Environment Variables

    • Verify production variables are set
    • Check they haven't been accidentally removed
    • Ensure they're marked as secret/hidden

Alert on:

  • Authentication failures
  • Rate limit exceeded
  • Unexpected API errors
  • Token expiration (set calendar reminder)

🎓 Security Training

For Developers

Never: - ❌ Commit .env files - ❌ Hardcode tokens - ❌ Share tokens in chat/email - ❌ Log tokens - ❌ Include tokens in error messages

Always: - ✅ Use environment variables - ✅ Add .env to .gitignore - ✅ Use placeholder tokens in docs - ✅ Review code for token leaks before commit - ✅ Rotate tokens regularly

Code Review Checklist

When reviewing PRs, check: - [ ] No .env files added - [ ] No tokens in code - [ ] Environment variables used correctly - [ ] No tokens in logs - [ ] Error messages are safe - [ ] Documentation uses placeholders

🆘 Incident Response

If Token is Leaked

Immediately: 1. Revoke the token at https://github.com/settings/tokens 2. Generate new token 3. Update all environments 4. Test that everything works

Investigation: 1. Find where it was leaked (commit, logs, etc.) 2. Remove from git history if committed 3. Check GitHub logs for unauthorized usage 4. Document what happened

Prevention: 1. Review how it happened 2. Update processes to prevent recurrence 3. Add additional safeguards if needed 4. Train team on best practices
